Smoke and Water Damage
There is nothing more distressing than the sight of a favorite piece of furniture that has been smoke, water, or moving damaged. Over 90% of damaged wood furnishings can be restored to 'better than before' condition and more economically than purchasing similar new furniture.
In fact wood restoration is the most cost effective and efficient method of bringing a fine piece of furniture back to life. In the case of antiques, restoration makes it possible to not only retain the beauty, color, and luster of the original finish, but the value of the antique as well.
Smoke is comprised of small particles of carbon and small droplets of wood tars, gases, soot, and ash. Wood smoke, according to the EPA, contains carbon monoxide, methane, formaldehyde, benzene, acetic acid, formic acid, toluene, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, organic carbons, and even trace amounts of heavy metals.
Smoke may seem to dissipate quickly after a fire, but the rapid cooling of the particle leaves a film and odor that penetrate furniture. The acid nature of this film causes discoloration and corrosion. In addition as flames are extinguished, relative humidity can range from 2% to 100%. This humidity can cause extensive problems in wood furniture. The wood's pores open and the wood absorbs various odors and chemicals often difficult to remove. Lockhart WoodWorks, Inc. specializes in restoring this damaged furniture and removing these odors.

Cabinet Finish Process
HAND SANDING - All surfaces are progressively sanded smooth, starting with #120 grit sandpaper, and finishing with 220 grit sandpaper.
CONDITIONING - Equalizer stain is applied to balance the base color of the wood. This is sometimes called sap staining and is the initial stain coat that is applied to diminish the contrast in wood tone between the lighter color sapwood and the darker heartwood.
STAINING - A deep penetrating stain is applied to establish consistent uniform color.
SEALER - A clear wood sealer is applied over the base stain.
SEALER SANDING - All surfaces are again hand sanded to 400 grit providing a smooth, consistent surface to accept topcoat
TONING - The application of addition color if applicable.
TOP COAT - Final application of a Pre-Catalyzed top coat lacquer is applied. This top coat is formulated to provide protection against moisture, UV fade, and household chemicals and exceeds all specifications required by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (ANSI/KCMA A161.1-1995).
We pay special attention to each job to ensure every detail is handled. We go above and beyond other finishers. For example, all undersides of upper cabinets are stained to match the color of the cabinets and then finished as well. Cabinet insides are clear coat finished to withstand moisture and can also be stained if desired. Cabinet sides that are not seen by the oven and dishwasher are finished to prevent any moisture problems. And each customer is given extra stain and a stain stick for touch ups.
Cabinet jobs are quoted on a linear foot bases and include cabinet boxes, door and drawer fronts, drawer box insides, shelves, crown and base molding.

Cabinets trends
Today kitchen cabinets in high-end homes are starting to look a whole lot more like pieces of furniture, complete with legs.
Lighter colored cabinets — either painted or stained — are also popular, along with using a mix of light and dark paints and stains in the same kitchen.
Where everything used to match, now the perimeter of the kitchen is one color and the island is another. Or you'll see different parts of the kitchen can be different colors. It provides a contrasting backdrop.
Glass cabinets are also in fashion with home buyers and designers. But they are used as an accent to show off the nicer glass and dinnerware in one or two places, not throughout the entire kitchen.
Kitchen islands — sometimes with a large peninsula attached that can seat people or be used as a buffet during parties — continue to be in demand.
And if the budget allows, and there's enough square footage, a coffee bar might be tucked into the corner of a kitchen or even placed in a master suite so the homeowners don't have to walk far for their morning caffeine fix.
Mainstream homeowners also are catching onto the green-building trend in kitchens. Not only are they asking for natural materials such as wood and stone, but they are requesting cabinets be painted, stained and sealed outside the house to avoid VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the home. When cabinets arrive from Lockhart Woodworks, they are VOC free.
